TAKE15: Prioritising Mental Health

World Mental Health Day is recognised on October 10th each year. It serves as a reminder for us to prioritise our mental wellbeing and raise awareness about mental health issues. It’s important to remember that mental health is just as important as our physical health. This day provides a valuable opportunity to initiate conversations, eliminate stigma, and promote and more empathetic and supportive society.

Breaking the Stigma: One of the primary goals of World Mental Health Day is to break down the stigma surrounding mental health. Misconceptions and stereotypes can prevent individuals from seeking help when they need it the most. By openly discussing mental health and sharing stories of personal experiences, we can create an environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking assistance and receiving treatment without judgment.

Promoting Mental Health Education: Education is key to building understanding and empathy for those facing mental health challenges. By learning about mental health conditions, their symptoms, and how they affect people, we become better equipped to recognise when someone might need support and be able to offer assistance. Self Care: Taking care of our own mental health is equally important. Consider taking a moment to reflect on your own wellbeing. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, practice mindfulness, and prioritize self-care. Remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, and if you're struggling, reaching out to a mental health professional can provide you with the necessary tools to navigate challenges.

Supporting others: World Mental Health Day is a reminder that we all have a role to play in supporting one another. Small acts of kindness, like lending an empathetic ear or checking in on a friend, can make a significant difference in someone's life. Workplaces can use this day to reassess their policies and practices, ensuring that they prioritise the mental wellbeing of their employees.

Research has shown that taking regular breaks at the workplace is essential for maintaining productivity, focus, and overall wellbeing (#TAKE15). Below are examples of 15-minute breaks that are perfectly acceptable and can help improve your workday:

  • Stretching Session: Do some simple stretches to alleviate tension and improve blood circulation.

  • Mindfulness Meditation: Engage in a brief meditation exercise to clear your mind and reduce stress.

  • Walk: Take a brisk walk around the office or outside to get some fresh air and stretch your legs.

  • Healthy Snack: Grab a snack like fruit, nuts, or yogurt to refuel your energy levels.

  • Social Interaction: Connect with a colleague or friend for a quick chat about non-work topics, fostering positive relationships.

  • Hydration Break: Drink a glass of water to stay hydrated and re-energize yourself. If you feel you need caffeine, opt for a tea or coffee.

  • Music Break: Listen to calming or motivating music to boost your mood and recharge.

  • Technology Detox: Step away from screens and digital devices, allowing your eyes and mind to rest.

Remember, the key is to use these breaks to relax and recharge, so you return to your tasks with renewed focus and energy.

Aramark’s TAKE15 campaign is a daily reminder that mental health is a fundamental part of our overall wellbeing. By encouraging open conversations, educating ourselves and others, and promoting understanding, we can contribute to a society that values and supports mental health. On October 10th and every day after, let's work together to create a world where mental health is a priority for all.
